In this day and age, many of us have large collections of digital movies on our hard drive(s). For me this collection became overwhelming, so in June 2010 I sat down and resolved to organize it.
Reasons to organize a movie collection:
- Movies scattered across multiple hard drives (with some duplicated, others not)
- No easy way to organize movies into categories (genre, year made, actor, director) and no possible way of categorizing one movie in multiple ways using just the filesystem. For instance, I want to find all the movies I own with Bill Murray in them, or all movies directed by Wes Andersen.
- Once a collection exceeds about 50 movies, I forget what I have.
My ideas and a loose roadmap for solving these problems:
- 1. Catalog all movies in a given directory. User manually inputs wikipedia movie, script pulls titles, directory, producer, year released and actors from infobox. (completed)
- 2. Attempt to automatically find a wikipedia page for a movie based on filename.
- 3. Generate HTML/TXT files listing movies, categorized by year made, genre, director, actors, etc.
